Upcoming Roundtable Aims to Generate Critical Debate on Health Care

The Center for Healthcare Innovation’s Executive Roundtable on October 12, 2017 will be focused on “Understanding Value in a Consumer-Oriented, Patient-Centric Era.” The Roundtable is an intimate, invitation-only, expert roundtable discussion for health care executives, key opinion leaders and patient groups to discuss how stakeholders throughout the health care ecosystem can address critical issues related to health care value, quality and cost. The Roundtable will be focused on a set of key market forces that affect the current state of health care.

Slashing costs

One pressing issue for our health care system is drug pricing. Total drug spending in the United States increased by 8.5 percent in 2016 and is expected to reach $400 billion by 2020. While the increased spending has put a clear strain on public and private payers, issues of value and access to prescription drugs have come to the forefront of national attention in health care. In fact, in a recent study, 60 percent of Americans identified lowering the cost of prescription drugs as a top priority, and 87 percent favored improving the ease with which generic drugs can come to market.

Shifting focus

Additionally, other market forces continue to impact the health care landscape. The pace of the shift from volume to value continues to increase. In 2014, 90 percent of payers and 81 percent of providers were already using some form of value-based purchasing. The heightened attention to value in health care also necessitates an increased focus on patient engagement. More informed, empowered patients are acting as consumers for their care and medications, and health care stakeholders need to tailor their approaches to better engage patients.

Changes in the political landscape also create uncertainty for everyone involved in health care — providers, payers, patients, biopharma and policy makers. The fate of the American Health Care Act will undoubtedly affect stakeholders throughout the health care ecosystem.

Providing a forum

The Center for Healthcare Innovation’s “Understanding Value in a Consumer-Oriented, Patient-Centric Era” Roundtable on October 12, 2017 in Manhattan is an expert, cross-sectoral collaborative discussion that will provide a forum for health care executives to discuss these issues and optimize engagement, communication and collaboration.
