6 Ways to Make Your Home Baby-Ready

One of the happiest moments in life is welcoming a new baby into your family. There are so many things to do, but one of the most important ways to prepare is ensuring your home is safe for your new addition.

More than 2,000 children, newborn to age 14, die each year from preventable injuries at home. Safety is something you must focus on throughout your child’s life, and you can start with these simple tips.

1. Plan for an emergency

Make sure carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are properly installed and working. Plan a fire escape route for your family and walk through it, checking that escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be easily accessed.

2. Keep dangerous items out of reach

Install child-proof latches on all cabinets that contain medicine, chemicals or any other poisonous items or choking hazards. Have the Poison Control number handy: (800) 222-1222.

3. Be alert around water

Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental deaths in kids under the age of 15. Gather towels and supplies before bath time so you don’t have to leave your child unattended. Always use a non-slip infant bathtub.

4. Secure heavy furniture

Televisions and furniture can be dangerous if not secured properly. Anchor TVs and heavy furniture to the wall with mounts, brackets, braces or straps. Close drawers while not in use and install child-proof drawer latches.

5. Prepare your crib

If you can fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the crib side, the crib is unsafe. Keep cribs away from windows, drapes, blinds and any cords from monitors of nearby electronics.

6. Practice sleep safety

Remove plush toys, pillows and blankets before bedtime and avoid using crib bumpers/padding. and learn infant CPR — it can save your baby’s life.

With your baby almost here, making your home safe and secure now will ensure you will spend a lifetime together making happy memories.
