Brushing Up on Oral Wellness with Dwight Howard
Advocacy The Houston Rockets all star weighs in on the importance of an effective daily oral health regimen.
Mediaplanet: How old were you when you got braces? How long did you have them for?
Dwight Howard: I was fourteen when I got braces. I had them for five years, until I was about nineteen.
MP: What was the biggest challenge with having braces?
DH: I’m sure I was no different than anyone else who has ever had braces. At first I hated them so much. I thought they were ugly. That changed once I got used to them and I actually grew to love them.
MP: What is one recommendation you have for people who are currently considering getting braces?
DH: Do exactly what your orthodontist says and know that the outcome is well worth it in the end.
MP: Do you feel that having a nice smile has benefited you or changed the way people treat you?
DH: I am blessed with great teeth, but they didn’t always look like this. I think it’s how I feel about myself on the inside that makes me smile so much, and that may be why people notice my teeth so much. No matter what, people are not going to treat me better because they like my teeth. If anything, I’d hope it’s because they can feel that I’m genuinely smiling with them.
MP: How much time would you say you commit to oral treatment?
DH: I’ve never really timed myself, but overall I take good care of myself hygienically. I workout a lot and usually always shower afterwards. Brushing my teeth and flossing has just become part of my routine several times a day. And of course I see my dentist regularly, which is a must for a candy man like myself.
